Glenn Ford plays submarine commander, Barney Doyle, who is obsessed with sinking the Japanese aircraft carrier, Shinaru. The carrier had previously escaped destruction by using a transport ship as a shield. The sunken transport had been carrying Doyle's wife and daughter. This tragically unavoidable incident transformed Doyle into a modern day Ahab, mercilessly driving the men under him towards the single goal of blowing the hated enemy out of the seas.
